    A Gateway to Nikko

    JR Nikko Station, which looks like a Western-style building, welcomes people who come to Nikko. Nearby, there is Tobu Nikko Station, where the limited express trains from Tokyo stop. Some limited express trains look like the old ones with a red body, some look like bullet trains. Traveling to Nikko by train is interesting because of the beautiful scenery.

    Shinkyo, which was inscribed as a World Heritage site in 1999, is worthy of decorating the entrance of the sanctuary Nikko. It is the oldest bridge in Japan in terms of the drawbridge style and is built over the gorge. The establishment of Shinkyo is full of mystery, but it is respected as a sacred bridge. It is a beautiful construction using thick wood, and has an elegant curve that forms a soft arc.

    Nikko Toshogu Shrine

    Nikko Toshogu Shrine

    Nikko Toshogu Shrine is a Shinto shrine established in 1617 to enshrine Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. One of the special features of the shrine complex is the use of paths and stairways that follow the natural topography of the site, allowing a pleasing balance to the arrangement of the shrine buildings, which create a solemn, religious atmosphere.

    Daifuku

    Daifuku is a type of Japanese confection consisting of a small round mochi (glutinous rice cake) stuffed with sweet filling, which is commonly sweetened red bean paste made from azuki beans. There is a Daifuku store, named Fukutokuan, in Nikko Toshogu Shrine whose Daifuku are made as offerings to the shrine.

    Yomeimon Gate

    One of the most beautiful gates in Japan, Yomeimon Gate, is said to have been given the name “Main Gate of the Imperial Court.” It is also called “Gate of the Setting Sun” because one could gaze upon it all day and never tire. It is covered with over 500 carvings depicting traditional anecdotes, children playing, sages and wise men.

    Roaring Dragon

    One of the buildings, called Honjido HallYakushido Hallin Nikko Toshogu Shrine is known for the ceiling painting Roaring Dragon. When clappers are struck in the hall, it feels like the dragon is roaring. However, it is only when the clappers are underneath the dragon’s face.     Rinnoji Temple is a Buddhist temple founded in 766. In its wide precinct, there is a mausoleum, called Taiyuin, of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third Tokugawa shogun. There are several statues of gods in Taiyuin. It is rare to see the statue of Umarokya who has an arrow which is said to be originate from Hamaya, a demon-breaking arrow.

    Masuzushi

    Masuzushi is a type of oshizushi (pressed sushi) which is made of vinegared trout sashimi on top of vinegared rice and wrapped in bamboo leaves. Nikko Masuzushi Honpo makes several kinds of bento (packed lunch), and one of the popular bentos is masuzushi. You can try it for lunch or a light meal while enjoying sightseeing in Nikko.

    There is a hidden spot in Nikko called Kanmangafuchi Abyss. It is said that there are about 70 Jizo statues lined up there. However, every time you count them, the total changes. That’s the reason why they are also called Ghost Jizo. Because of the beautiful scenery, you will be calmed while walking around the abyss.

    Washoku

    It is said that washoku, which means Japanese-style meal in Japanese, embodies the Japanese spirit of respect for nature. One type of washoku is served as multi-course cuisine called Kaiseki.     Lake Chuzenji

    Lake Chuzenji

    Some 20,000 years ago, the lava which flowed out with the eruption of Mt. Nantai dammed up the river and thereby created Lake Chuzenji. The maximum depth of the lake is 163 meters, and the circumference is about 25 kilometers. The lake is beautiful especially with autumn leaves. It is fun not only to hike around the lake but also to take a cruise.

    The water of Lake Chuzenji, which falls almost 100 meters straight down from the huge rock face, is Kegon Waterfall.
