Kamakura Daibutsu(Great Buddha of Kamakura)
The statue commonly known as Kamakura Daibutsu, a colossal copper image of Amida-butsu(Amitabha Buddha), is the principle image of Kotoku-in. The fact that it sits in the open air makes it unusual amongst large Buddha statues in Japan. It is 11.3 meters tall and weighs around 121 tons. It is said that the construction of the Great Buddha began in 1252.

Zeniarai Benzaiten Shrine
Zeniarai Benzaiten Shrine was built by Minamoto Yoritomo who was the founder and the first shogun of the Kamakura shogunate, the period from 1192 to 1333. It is believed that washing your money with the shrine’s water brings you more money. Benzaiten is the Buddhist patron goddess of literature, music and wealth.

Hongakuji Temple
In 1436, Hongakuji Temple was founded by Nichiren, the founder of Nichiren Buddihism which is one of the largest schools of Japanese Buddhism. The temple enshrines Ebisu, the god of wealth. You can get small amulets called Nigirifuku there for ¥500/each. There are five kinds: wealth, health, love, education and good fortune. It is said that your wish will come true by holding it once a day.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine
The shrine, which is located at the center of Kamakura, is Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. It was established by Minamoto Yoriyoshi in 1063, and the deities of the shrine were regarded as the protectors of the warrior class. The current main shrine, which is a typical example of Edo shrine architecture, and the Wakamiya shirine are designated as nationally important cultural properties.

Wagashi is one of the Japanese traditional confections, which is often served with green tea. There is a type of wagashi called Jyonamagashi. It is beautifully shaped to reflect the season. Near Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, there is a mom-and-pop style wagashi store named Misuzu. They make various types of wagashi, including Jyonamagashi, by reservation only (service available only in Japanese).

Hokokuji Temple
When you’d like to feel calm and relaxed, Hokokuji Temple is one of the best places and was established in 1334. It is known as a bamboo temple, and there are about 2,000 bamboo trees in the garden. You can sit and admire the scenery of bamboo grove with a cup of green tea at the tea house in the garden.

Kamakura Vegetables(Kamakura Farmer’s Market)
Kamakura Vegetables are a famous brand of vegetables harvested in Kamakura. A lot of chefs and cooking specialists often go to Kamakura from Tokyo to buy Kamakura Vegetables. There is the Kamakura Farmer’s Market called Renbai near Kamakura Station. At the market, you can buy fresh seasonal Kamakura Vegetables.

Sugimotodera Temple
Sugimotodera Temple, which was established in 734, is the first Buddhist site and the oldest temple in Kamakura. In the Main Hall, three statues of eleven-headed Kannon are enshrined. The temple is also famous for its mossy stairs. However, it is now prohibited to use the stairs because they are very slippery. It is sufficient just to admire them because the atmosphere is wonderful around there.

Hasedera Temple
In 721, two sculptors carved two statues of Kannon out of a sacred tree. The history of Hasedera Temple began when one of the statues was enshrined at a temple. The statue is commonly known as the eleven-headed Kannon and measures 9.18 meters tall. A museum opened in the precinct in 1980. In the museum, thirty-three avatars of Kannon and other ancient treasures are displayed.

Enoden(Enoshima Electric Railway)
The best way to visit the major spots in Kamakura area is by taking Enoden, a local railway that departs from Kamakura to Fujisawa via Enoshima. Most of the famous sightseeing spots are along this line. It runs along the coast and winds through the backyards of houses. You can also enjoy wonderful views from the train window.
From Kamakura to Enoshima
The sunset in Kamakura is spectacular. Inamuragasaki is known as the place where you can see a beautiful sunset, and there is Yuigahama beach around Inamuragasaki. It may be one of the most memorable moments in Kamakura to stroll along the road, which runs parallel to the beach and the Enoden track, to Enoshima while the sun is setting.
